Palliative Music Practice in End of Life Care

Music-thanatology is a professional field within the broader sub-specialty of palliative care. It is a musical/clinical modality that unites music and medicine in end of life care. The music-thanatologist utilizes harp and voice at the bedside to lovingly serve the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the dying and their loved ones with prescriptive music.

Kieran Schnabel CM-Th. Kieran graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. Kieran is a multi-instrumentalist who first began musical studies with the piano at age 5. After completing his vocal performance studies at the University of Oregon, Kieran went in search of a meaningful way to utilize music beyond stage performance. In music-thanatology Kieran found a depth of purpose and went on to attend the Music-Thanatology Training Program at Lane Community College. He graduated in 2011 and has become a certified professional member of the Music-Thanatology Association International. He has taught harp and voice, and offered workshops on music-thanatology, theory and improvisation.
